Linda's Lyrics Challenge

Postby ForgetMeNots on Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:17 am

Linda (Lyndabook) will be your hostess for this fun challenge. Just a few lines from a song can bring memories rushing back. Music is not only the theme for theater plays and movies, but often it plays as the sound track for our lives. Do you have a favorite song? Are there scrappable memories to play along? Then we have a challenge for you!

1. Create a layout using song lyrics, a photo and at least a line or two of journaling that shares why the song fits the photo or about the memory that is associated with it.

2. Use at least 90% Heritage Scrap Product.

3. Post in the Linda's Lyrics Challenge Gallery between Friday November 6 and Sunday November 8 Midnight Eastern Time. A winner will be chosen and notified on Monday November 9. The winner will receive Annie's Digital Things' beautiful Parlor Music kit.

Oh this will be a fun one!! I was just in the Christmas Card forum and read Jan's wonderful story of drinking hot cocoa by the wood stove after taking a joyous carriage ride. I could actually hear the bells and the horse's hooves and found myself humming "Jingle Bells" - Dashing through the snow, on a one horse open sleigh..... Oh I love that fun song. Then I also started thinking of my own grandmother and thought of "Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go, the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow, Oooohhhh......" Another fun song from my childhood!!! Which to scrap, which to scrap??????

Then when we grow older and realize the wondrous, miraculous gift of our precious Savior, I think of the worship and praise songs like Silent Night and Joy to the World. Sometimes songs can say things of our heart that our head just can't seem to verbalize! The melody and the sweet words coming from deep within our soul says so much! I love praising the Lord in song!!!

There are just sooooo many songs to choose from - serious or light-hearted - they all tell of the season and we will have a ton of fun scrapping the lyrics! I can't wait to see the gallery fill up with all the wonderful songs of the season!!!

Vicki, we had to cross a river on a trestle and then go up a steep hill to go to both my grandparents' houses. We always sang, "Over the river and up the hill, to Grandmother's house we go, the car knows the way to drive us today..." Silly I know... but you're allowed to be silly when you're five! LOL

Is it Christmas Yet?!!

Postby janmy3rs on Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:03 am

Oh Vicki, it's funny that you mentioned my story making you think of Jingle Bells. That was always the first song all of us kids would break out singing followed quickly by Jingle Bell Rock of course. What kid can't resist that song. As we woud ride by peoples homes I remember sitting there cuddled next to grandpa to keep warm holding the reins and watching the neighbors come to the windows or come stand in their doorways. As I think about it now, we must have been pretty loud. There is one older couple that sticks in my mind the most. Every year they would come stand on their porch holding each other and watching us. It didn't matter what song we happened to be singing they would always join in and wave. Grandpa would wave back.

There are so many "favorite" Christmas songs, each with their own special feeling or warmth to the soul. But my favorite of all would have to be Walking in a Winter Wonderland. As we returned home this is always the song grandpa would start us kids off singing. We'd all pile out of the sleigh singing. The other kids would run inside and I'd lag behind helping put the horse back in the barn. He'd put his arm around me and we'd walk back to the house silent soaking up the moment watching the snow glisten in the moonlight. Eventually he would start whistling the tune the rest of the way to the house. Now that I think of this I wonder if that was his favorite song? I wish I could ask him. But regardless it is my favorite for a very special reason.

Look at this, this is even better. I just peaked out the window and I can see snow falling in the light. Timing couldn't have been more perfect!

Your grandpa sounds like such a wonderful and special man, Jan! I love your stories about him! I had such a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother to enjoy while I was young. Grandparents are such a blessing to have! When I was young, I had 9 grandmas and grandpas including all the greats. All of them left a lasting mark on me; they helped to shape my character and who I became as an adult. I lost my last grandma just a few years ago so I had the good fortune to have grandparents for 50 years of my life! Now, with my poor kids, its a different story. They only had one grandpa who passed two years ago and one grandmother who is pretty emotionally distant from them. Its so sad! Especially since I know the joy grandparents can bring - no one can make you feel quite so special as a loving set of grandparents who love to spoil kids! You knew you had to shape up when you went back home, but it sure was great getting all that special attention and lovin' at Grandma's house!

Just thought of another thing...is the challenge to do holiday or Christmas songs, or any song lyrics?
My uncle Peter played his trumpet at every family occassion, and he always played Amazing Grace. This hymn has special memories for me. He played it on the large BC Ferry on our trip to a family gathering on Vancouver Island, standing out on the front of the outdoor passenger deck, sea gulls wheeling in the wind, and there stood Uncle Peter, playing Amazing Grace. I don't have an actual photo, but I will always have the mental picture.
Maybe, other songs/hymns have special memories for us.

WOW Helene! Having been on that fairy and seen how gorgeous it is in the islands on the way to Vancouver Island, I could place myself there and see it in my mind's eye. Sent shivers down my spine. Amazing Grace is special to me. The summer at family camp that I chose to follow God and was baptised in the river, we had a camp talent show and I played Amazing Grace on my flute. I was only 11 and I doubt it was a spine shivering rendition in the good sense of that phrase (!) but it cemented my decision and I always cry when we sing that song as it means so much to me. So many good songs to choose from!

Thanks for sharing that Linda. I'm really looking forward to these challenges this weekend. Uncle Peter also played Amazing Grace at the cemetary after my father burial. He stood off to one side, and payed it as we gathered around. It was so emotional.
I was baptized in a very cold outdoor stream when I was 17, but do not remember what songs were sang or played.

Helene,
You asked if the challenge was for songs of the season or any song. You can do any song, not just songs of the seasons. I made my layout with a song that I remember my Uncle singing all the time while I was growing up, it brings back lots of memories as do a lot of songs that we hear. Have fun and any song will do.

I was having a problem logging into the gallery, but I will keep trying.
