Vintage Kitchen Challenge

Postby ForgetMeNots on Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:54 am

The Heritage Scrap Designer's Collaboration for November is Vintage Kitchen and there are 9 lovely kits to choose from. You have a chance to win your choice of 2 of them! Marnie from our Creative Team will be your hostess for this challenge.

For this challenge:

1. Create a layout using at least 90% Vintage Kitchen product. This layout should include a photo, a recipe and a little bit of journaling. Reminisce about Grandma's cooking or your favorite Thanksgiving or holiday dish.

2. Layouts must be posted in the Vintage Kitchen Challenge Gallery and post a note here.

3. Challenge runs from Friday November 6 to Midnight Eastern time Sunday November 8. The winner will be announced on Monday November 9 and he/she will be given a coupon to choose two of the Vintage Kitchen Collaboration kits.

We are looking forward to seeing what's cooking in your family tree! Also, remember, Helene (Victoria32) is running a wonderful serial challenge, The Art of Cooking, Heritage Style. Create a wonderful heirloom cookbook with us!

Ohhhh, this will be a hard one for me!! Food is such an important part in my family's holiday celebrations and traditions! We have such grand feasts since there were so many of us and it seems each of us has found our own little niche in adding special touches to the festivities - Aunt Linda's Sour Cream Cake, Mom's Cranberry Relish, Will's *Funny Runny Stuff*, Dad's Baked Beans, and my own *My Favorite Jello* - all come to mind among others. It seems the menu was a lot of the same dishes as at every holiday meal but since they are favorites, everyone looks forward to their favorites! And of course, we always like to try new recipes! Each feast has a few new surprises to try and comment on. It will be hard for me to even begin!

My Dad always began Christmas morning at his house with his famous pancakes! Everyone loved Dad's pancakes and they soon became a tradition when we moved the family gathering to the Sunday before Christmas when we all grew up with our own families. Everyone crowded into Mom and Dad's kitchen early in the morning before all the other aunts and uncles arrived later in the day. Just our parents with their children and grandchildren - what a special *private* time!

My Dad and my son were always very close right from the time Phillip could reach out to be held as a baby until the time Dad passed on when Phil was 8! They enjoyed each other's company whenever they could - they were just *thick as thieves* as my Grama would say! Dad taught Phil how to make pancakes and shared some of his special secrets and tips with him. They would make big batches of them and then bag them up in small batches to freeze. That way Phillip always had Paw's pancakes for breakfast each day. Now, it brought joy to my heart last week when Phillip told me that he wanted to continue Paw's pancake breakfast for Christmas! Even as young as he was when he spent all that time with his Grandpa, he picked up on the important things! I am so proud of my son and love my Dad so much for all his continuing love even now from heaven!

I look forward to seeing everyone's special recipes and the memories they bring with them!

Great memories Vicki. We too have wonderful "pancake" memories. We always made pancakes for the Sunday morning breakfast for our children. Now our daughter makes them for her children.

Vicki that is so wonderful about your Dad and son! I think you should do a page about that! Super that the tradition will be past on. My Grandpa was the one in our family famous for his pancakes. He only made them on hunting and camping trips. I'll have to sort through the camping photos... I hope someone caught him making "Grandpa's Mountain Pancakes" on the griddle. Thanks for the reminder!

Pancakes

Postby janmy3rs on Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:14 am

If you have pancakes you have to have maple syrup! My Great grandfather and grandfather made homemade maple syrup every year. This tradition has passed on to his boys. I remember going out to the old sap house to watch. Either my dad or grandpa would be out there to stir it and control the fire. The woodstove couldn't get too hot nor too cold and it would cook for days. Flowing through the maze to a little spicket at the end. I was always afraid to touch anything in there. It was sticky!! No matter how hard we tried to clean the walls and everything that stuff doesn't come off! I used to always like to go out there because I knew of the secret. On one small side of the woodstove next to that enormous vat there was always a little pot sitting there cooking. Ah they were making maple candy! What kid can resist that? That was usually always my motivation to go into that sticky sauna..CANDY! But of course I enjoyed learning about the process and for a 12 year old it was really fascinating. Didn't realize it was such a science to make syrup. Needless to say pancakes were also a big item for breakfast or for a late night snack if a fresh batch of syrup was ready. And maple sugar is wonderful on oatmeal...not so good in coffee. Tried that a couple years ago, the last time grandpa brought me a bunch of maple syrup products. Won't do that again. LOL

Oh this does sound fun! Do you have pictures??? I hope you do a layout with it. What other maple sugar products are there besides the syrup and candy? I know at the festival we attended, they had the candy crystals on little sticks. Is that how your family did it? We tasted the real syrup and it sure is a lot better and tastier than the imitation stuff you get in the grocery store! I've always been fascinated too with this whole process. Who would ever have thought of getting sap out of a tree and turning it into something so good to eat?!? And I guess I thought the sap came out much faster, like when you cut into some juicy type of fruit. It must take tons of trees or many, many days to collect enough sap!

Oh yes, real maple syrup for the pancakes. I once read a mystery novel with a setting around a maple syurp farm, so got an idea of how much work is involved in the process. These are great memories to share and to get written down for future generations. If these don't fit in the Vintage kitchen catagory, maybe in Theresa's Stories to Tell challenge would be a good place to add them.

Unfortunately, I don't have many pictures at all. My parent's home burned in '95 and we lost everything. I've tried many years to get copies of pictures out of family, however, I haven't been very successful yet. I have received a few over the course of years, just none of the syrup. You can make all kinds of stuff from syrup...different types of candy (hard and soft), a type of fudge, and the sugar is the best. The soft, melt in your mouth candy and the soft crumbles of sugar were my favorite. We ran out of homemade syrup one time last year so I bought the stuff in the store and we figured it wasn't that bad and would do. Nope, the kids rioted and the hubby said never again. So now we keep a better eye on our syrup supply so this never happens again. I'm sure this tradition will pass to my husband and son in time. I'm sure these don't quite fit in the Vintage Kitchen challenge, but it did spark a memory that I couldn't refuse. Not sure what's happened but seems as though I can now journal. LOL

1. I am so glad you are joining me in this challenge. Remember, we are incorporating a photo, a recipe, and some journaling in our layouts. Choose one of the Vintage Kitchen kits http://www.heritagescrap.com/shop/index ... ge+kitchen for your layout. Create your layout using at least 90% of the Vintage Kitchen product.

2. After you complete your layout, post it in the Vintage Kitchen Challenge Gallery. http://heritagescrap.com/Gallery/showga ... hp?cat=762

3. Come back to this forum and post a note that you have uploaded your layout. We all want to see your lovely work and stock up on some of these “yummy” recipes.

4. This challenge will continue from Friday, Nov. 6 till midnight on Sunday, Nov. 8 EST.

5. Best of all, the winner, who will be announced in this forum on Monday, Nov. 9, receives a coupon for not one, but TWO of the Vintage Kitchen kits of their choice.

After you create your recipe page, you may find that you want to create more recipe layouts and make a recipe book for your family or friends. We have some more kitchen kits you may be interested in seeing. Any of these kits would make wonderful recipe layouts for a family recipe book.

Oh, how clever of you to use a little from each kit. Superb idea! Reading the description reminded me so much of my grandmother's kitchen. I loved the smell of the wood burning stove and she also had really tall built in cabinets, although I don't think they were called that then. Thanks for doing this challege and bringing back some wonderful moments for me.

How terrific to find this group! I'm working on a recipe book of family and friends. After attending the chat yesterday, I decided to use all of the elements requested for that challenge into a recipe page. Lots of stuff was used from Lynn Griffin's Vintage Kitchen kit and Jean Daugherty's Leaves of Time. I can see in the shoppe there are many more kits I'll be needing! The recipe page that I've done here is a scanned page of cake variations my grandma used - from her sisters and stepmother:

Ellen,

We are so glad, also, you found us and joined in the challenge. I saw your recipes and they made my mouth water. I found HS months ago when I thought about making a "family recipe" book and I've been here ever since. Hope you stay with us, join in the fun, and post more of your layouts for us to enjoy. Glad you are here!

WINNER of the Challenge

Postby marnie on Mon Nov 09, 2009 1:59 am

I wish to thank all of you who joined in the Vintage Kitchen challenge. It was fun doing it, and we all have some great, new recipes to try. The trouble, now, has been narrowing the choices down to just one winner. This has been so hard to do because all of the layouts are fantastic. In that sense you all are winners.
However, the winner of the challenge is Ellen.

Congratulations, Ellen. You will be pm’d by one of the site administrators on how to claim your prize.

Thanks again to everyone who joined in to make this a fun challenge.
